Your student will bring a home work folder each night. Please check the folder for homework and notes, and make sure they bring their folder with them the next day. Students recieve dojo points for returning folders and homework so please make sure both are returned to school the next day.

Students will have homework everyday. They should be reading their weekly reading story in our Reading series book, as well as reading their take home reading book (they will have a separate folder for this).

They will also have nightly math homework. We will do a few problems on our math homework in class, and then they should finish it at home.

No spelling this year, that will start in 2nd grade.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get ahold of me. The best mode of communication is Class Dojo.

  • Science of Studying

Are you the student who usually doesn’t know there’s a test until the day of? Or the student who stays up the entire night before a big exam to cram as much information into your brain as possible? If so, you’re not doing yourself a favor. You may think, “well I won’t need to know the quadratic formula after high school.” Being the student with this kind of attitude only sets yourself up for future failure.

Most teachers goals aren’t to have you necessarily remember the quadratic formula years down the road, but instead to help youlearnoverall, whichdoes help your brain (believe it or not!)

Different classes help to focus on developing and challenging different parts of the brain. When a person crams material for a test, it is only stored in the short-term memory. The fast pace of trying to learn the material, doesn’t help it to stick well. This makes it hard to connect the new material with things you’ve learned in your previous long-term memory. Therefore, you don’t ever really learn the material you cram for. A simple way to put this is, you have to know what an apple is, before you understand the idea of an apple pie.

Next week is the week of final exams. If you’re a regularly disciplined student, who learns a small amount each class, final exam week should be a breeze for you.  However, many of us will feel overwhelmed with feeling the need to cram. The best advice is to not worry about what grade you will get on the exam, but focus on the need to learn the material. Fully understanding and knowing a few concepts is more rewarding than regurgitating tons of answers that you don’t actually understand. Learn a little each day, and don’t overwhelm/cram your brain 24 hours before an exam, then I’m sure you’ll see a difference in your grades and your anxiety. :)

  • Celtics winning streak

The Boston Celtics held a 16 game winning streak. They had big wins over the Thunder, Hornets, Warriors, Hawks, and the Mavericks winning the games by as many as double digits. The Celtics have young and growing talent as well as a couple veterans. The Celtics’ draft pick this year was Jason Tatum. Jason attended college at Duke University and was very talented. The oldest player on the Celtics’ team is Al Horford, 31 years old. Horford is a stretch 5 man, he can spread the floor, bang inside, pass, and grab rebounds. The Celtics’ star player is Kyrie Irving. This is Kyrie’s first year in Boston. He came from The Cavaliers after requesting a trade. Kyrie was the sidekick to arguably the greatest player of all time, Lebron James. Kyrie possesses a versatile range of skill and aggressiveness. At only 25 years of age Kyrie already has years of playoff and even finals experience, and is not afraid to take the big shots, and orchestrate a team. Other Celtics’ key players are: Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Morris, Aaron Baynes, and Terry Rozier.

The Celtics’ streak was ended at 16 games losing to the Miami Heat. The winning streak which almost stood as the fourth longest winning streak in their franchise history. This is no easy achievement when looking back at some of the Celtics’ great teams including the 85-86 Celtics with greats of Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, Kevin Mchale, and Danny Ainge. Also including the 2008 Celtics including The big four of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett. When comparing this year's Celtics to these great teams they are among the greatest. The disappointing outcome against the Heat ended the Celtics’ winning streak. The outcome was 104-98. The Heat’s record is 10-11. The Heat’s key players consist of Hassan Whiteside, Goran Dragic, and Dion Waiters. This team is not winning their conference and they are not rebuilding. They are stuck in the middle just trying to win games. The game Wednesday November 22nd took place on Miami’s home court. The Heat had a lot of help from Goran Dragic, 27 points, and DIon waiters, who dethroned Boston’s comeback scoring 8 points in the final 3 minutes. The story of the game was Miami’s momentum feeding off the crowd and bench players, which lead them to rally past the Celtics by 6 points.

Although the Celtics do not hold an outstanding winning streak anymore, don’t overlook them as they are the best team in the East with the record of 18-4. Despite this small set back the Celtics are still looking to remain aggressive and show the league they are a finals contender and will not be a doormat for the toughened western conference.
